A personal story; Ramesh Patel

(Benefit of resemblance to a working SDG Goal 4 ) https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal4

I am a Danish citizen, and Denmark has established government financial study support payed by taxes, and a wide verity of free educations – also payed by taxes. I used this privileged to lean as much as possible. I studied Electronic repairs and Pedagogical Education with a 5 month abroad study period – with financial support. I landed in Asha Nivas Social Service Center with my wife that worked as a volunteer.

What i leaned was that my culture is very different in many aspects, to the one in Asha Nivas when i spend 5 month working with them: How business is done, How we speak with each other in private and in work situations. Leaving me with questions, hope and love for other cultures.

( Where to engage in my case ) https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal11 and https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal12

Today – now 17 years later from my Asha Nivas work – i think i understand my own place in a global scale. First now when i am in the process of starting my own company, i “look” through the SDGs perspective and arguments & news from danwatch.dk and worldsbestnews.org, i see that if i use Brass in my product -that contains copper, i also need to promote responsible copper mining like in the case of Fairtrade Gold. If i do not seek responsible copper mining for the Brass, i indirectly support the negative effects of mining (SDG Goal 12 – Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns).

( My progress ) – Halfway: i have leaned why & how: now i have to act on my knowledge.

Since i just have funds and time to develop my own product, i can choose to work towards compatibility with the SDGs in all my development processes, resulting in a product that has the potential to directly and indirectly influence others to focus on the SDG Goals, that actually has the time and capacity to do some real SDG work – trusting that many “small” and local solved problems can change some of our global issues.

( Detached local-global lifestyle ) https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal1 and https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal17

I live in Denmark; i have a great opportunity to influence my own view on life, and act accordingly. While i know others do not have the same kind of opportunities that i have – i trust that – if i personally perform a healthy work ethic on the basis of the 17 SDG Goals; Goal 17 – Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development, I indirectly do work that promote SDG Goal 1 – End poverty in all its forms everywhere.
